COOKIE POLICY

The following cookie policy has been prepared by the Foundation to describe the types of cookies used on the website www.centannus.va, including any extension of that domain (the ‘Website’) and on the related platform, in order to describe the reasons for and conditions of use of the same. It is not possible to optimally consult the Website or use the Services offered therein without sending certain cookies to the user’s device.

By continuing to browse the website, the user authorises the Foundation to use some of its cookies. However, it is possible to disable and avoid the use of specific types of cookies by configuring the browser settings, as specified in more detail in the following paragraph ‘Disabling the use of cookies’.

WHAT ARE COOKIES?

Cookies are text files used to perform automatic authentication, session tracking and storage of specific information about users accessing the Foundation’s server. In detail, they are small text strings that are sent from the Foundation’s server to the user’s web client (usually a browser) and then sent back from the client to the server (without undergoing any changes) each time the user accesses the same portion of the same web domain. A cookie is therefore a small file that requires the user’s permission to be stored on the hard disk of the user’s computer. Once consent has been given in the manner described below, the file is added and the cookie helps to analyse the user’s web traffic, allowing us to know when the user visits a particular website. In this way, the web application can adapt its operations to the user’s needs and/or tastes, collecting and storing information about their preferences.

TYPES OF COOKIES, NATURE AND PURPOSE OF THE DATA COLLECTED

The Foundation uses the following types of cookies:

  • Technical cookies: these are cookies necessary for the functioning of the Website and the provision of services offered to the user.
  • So-called ‘analytics’ cookies: these fall within the macro category of technical cookies and are used by the Foundation to statistically analyse accesses and/or visits to the Website and are installed exclusively for statistical purposes and/or to collect information in aggregate form. The ‘Google Analytics’ cookie is currently in use on the Website for the purposes described above.
  • Session cookies: these are technical cookies sent by the Foundation’s servers to the user’s terminal and occasionally by third-party sites to track the use of the Website during a particular session. These cookies are generally stored on the user’s browser for the duration of the session. These cookies expire when the browser is closed.
  • Persistent cookies: these are constant cookies that continue to operate even after the browser is closed. This allows for easier and faster access to the Website.
  • Functional cookies: these allow the Website to remember the choices made by the user (username, language, country), thus providing better and more personalised functions.
  • Performance cookies: these collect and analyse information on how visitors use the Website (pages visited, number of visits, time spent on the site, etc.) in order to provide the user with a better browsing experience. These cookies do not collect information that allows the user to be identified. All data collected by these cookies is aggregated and, therefore, anonymous and used solely to improve the functioning of the Website.
  • First-party cookies: these are cookies installed directly by the Foundation on the user’s device in order to make the Website function efficiently and to track the behaviour patterns of visitors to the Website.
  • Third-party cookies: these are cookies installed by third-party companies affiliated with the Foundation on the Website. The Website may host advertisements, such as banner ads from other companies, in its browser, which in turn install cookies. These may be used exclusively to store data that the user has entered, in some circumstances, on one or more websites.

THIRD-PARTY COOKIES

The Foundation uses the following third-party cookies:

  • the Donatio donation system, which allows donations to be made. This cookie is managed entirely by the Vatican Internet Office;
  • the EPay online donation system, which allows donations to be made online. This cookie is managed entirely by the Vatican Internet Office.

DISABLING THE USE OF COOKIES

Most browsers are initially configured to accept cookies automatically. However, you can change these settings and block the use of cookies through your browser settings. There are several ways to manage cookies. Please refer to your browser’s help screen to find out how to adjust or change your browser settings. Disabling the use of technical and/or functional cookies may cause the Website to malfunction and/or limit the services offered by the Foundation.
